Unboxing That Sells: Material and Finish Choices for E-commerce, Beauty and Food Brands
Customers judge a brand in the first three seconds of opening a box — by weight, texture and colour, before they read a word. Material and finish are what create that first impression, and they should be chosen for the product and the customer, not just for the photo.
Materials: what each one says
- Kraft: honest, natural and recyclable. Ideal for eco-positioned e-commerce and food brands, and it prints well in one colour or full colour.
- White board (300g) and coated art paper (350g): smooth, bright and colour-accurate. Ideal for beauty, skincare and gift boxes where skin tones, gradients and brand colour must match.
- E-flute and B-flute corrugated: light but protective. Ideal for shipping boxes that still need to look good on camera.
- Grayboard with art wrap: the rigid-box core. Heavy, stable and premium to hold, ideal for sets, candles and jewellery.
Where sustainability matters, FSC-certified paper options are available, and recyclable, plastic-free packaging can be requested. Our quality system is ISO 9001, and colour, glue strength and piece-by-piece inspection are checked before packing.
Finishes: what each one feels like
- Matte lamination: soft, muted and fingerprint-resistant. The safe premium default.
- Gloss lamination: bright and vivid. Best when colour pop matters more than tactility.
- Soft-touch + spot UV: a velvety base with a raised, glossy highlight — logo, pattern or product name. The contrast is what customers remember.
- Hot foil stamping and embossing: metallic shine or a raised texture for logos and borders. Use sparingly; one foil element beats five.
Match finish to brand, not to trend
A food brand that ships weekly needs a finish that survives handling and looks clean on repeat orders — matte or gloss, with a clear print. A beauty gift set that is opened on camera benefits from soft-touch and a single foil or spot-UV accent. An eco brand should let kraft and a simple one-colour print do the talking, rather than hiding the material under heavy lamination.
Test before you commit
Finishes look different in photos, in daylight and in hand. A printed proof, which takes 3–5 working days, is the right place to judge matte versus gloss, or whether foil is too much. Send your material and finish shortlist with your box dimensions, and the factory can confirm what works at your quantity.
